The Day Iceland Stood Still

The event and the film serve as motivation and inspiration:
On October 24, 1975, more than 90 percent of Iceland’s women went on strike. They stopped working in offices, refused unpaid care work, and withdrew from cooking and childcare. With this collective action, women made the invisible visible and demonstrated just how indispensable they are to the functioning of society as a whole.
Fifty years after this historic day, director Pamela Hogan and contemporary witness Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir bring the voices of many of these courageous women back into the spotlight. They trace the roots of the strike and make clear its lasting impact on feminist struggle, emancipation, and the advancement of women’s rights.
Following the screening, we will be in conversation with Adrienne Goehler about the motivations behind ENOUGH! GENUG!, her conviction that the status quo is no longer sustainable at any level, and the global women’s* general strike—along with the many powerful, creative, and colorful actions taking place on March 9.
